RETROSOUNDThe first wave

Retrosound

A sound recorded. A new life to invent.

From the Emax in 1986 to the Emax II in 1989, sampling made recorded sounds something to play, shape and transform.

A musical way of sampling

A bank holds more than recordings: keyboard mapping, loops and playing parameters shape the result. DANA studies that relationship rather than treating a historical bank as a simple list of WAV files.

Why DANA?

The name pays tribute to Dana Massie, co-designer of the E-chip with Dave Rossum. It connects the instrument to the people behind the technology. This tribute does not imply affiliation or endorsement.

An era, and your next idea

The Emax instruments accompanied Depeche Mode on stage. Their history is a starting point: use a familiar bank or your own recording to make something personal. Artist references describe the original instruments, not an endorsement of Retrosound.
